Distributed Synchronous Condenser System Solution
01. Solution Overview
Distributed synchronous condensers provide new energy power stations with supporting capabilities such as rapid voltage regulation, wide-band oscillation suppression, and increased short-circuit ratio; they serve as the “stabilizer” and “ballast” of new energy systems.
Functions and Roles of Distributed Synchronous Condensers:
In the transient domain: At the instant a grid fault occurs—resulting in a voltage dip—the units rapidly inject a substantial amount of reactive power within a timeframe ranging from a few to several tens of milliseconds, thereby mitigating both the magnitude and the rate of the grid voltage drop.
In the temporary domain: During the fault recovery period—when grid voltage remains depressed—the excitation system can engage in “forced excitation” mode; within a span of several to several tens of seconds, the units provide reactive power support exceeding 1.5 times (or even more) their rated capacity, thereby facilitating the restoration of grid voltage.
In terms of steady-state operation, continuous reactive power regulation can be performed within the design range, allowing the unit to both generate and absorb inductive reactive power.Regarding short-circuit capacity, the system short-circuit ratio is enhanced, thereby bolstering system strength and increasing the output and total generation volume of new energy power sources.
With respect to rotational inertia, during system frequency disturbances, the kinetic energy stored in the synchronous condenser’s rotor can be released without delay, offering a faster response speed compared to traditional frequency control methods.
The synchronous condenser system primarily comprises the main condenser unit, a lubrication oil system, a cooling system, an electrical system, a prefabricated enclosure, an intelligent monitoring system, and other components.
02. Solution Advantages
Prefabricated Cabin Layout
The various equipment modules can be arranged within prefabricated cabins.
The layout can be adjusted on-site to accommodate the specific conditions of different stations.
This highly modular and integrated design enhances the convenience of transportation, installation, and commissioning.
Integrated Main Unit
The main unit features a highly integrated design with a compact structure, a small footprint, and light weight, facilitating both installation and transport.
The unit— including both the stator and rotor—is transported to the site as a single assembly and installed in its entirety; this approach significantly shortens the on-site installation cycle and enhances installation
quality.
