Feb. 9, 2026 – With the wide application of motors in harsh industrial and outdoor environments, the dust and water resistance of motor shells has become a key indicator affecting equipment reliability and service life. Recently, a professional IP55-grade shell dust and water resistance test was carried out to systematically verify the protection capability of motor shells against dust intrusion and spray water, providing authoritative reference for the motor industry and related application fields.
IP (Ingress Protection) rating, formulated by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and implemented in accordance with GB/T 4208-2017 standard in China, is an internationally recognized indicator to evaluate the dust and water resistance of electrical equipment enclosures. The IP55 rating consists of two digits: the first digit “5″ represents the dust resistance level, meaning that dust intrusion cannot be completely prevented, but the amount of dust entering shall not affect the normal operation of the motor; the second digit “5″ indicates the water resistance level, requiring the motor shell to resist water sprayed from any direction without harmful effects.
The test was carried out in strict accordance with international standards and professional procedures. Before the test, motor samples were preprocessed in a drying oven at 40℃±2℃ for 24 hours to eliminate the impact of transportation humidity. In the dust resistance test, the motors were placed in a closed dust chamber, and talcum powder with a particle size of ≤75μm was blown cyclically at a concentration of 2kg/m³ for 8 hours, during which the motor function was tested every 2 hours to check whether dust intrusion affected its operation.
In the water resistance test, a calibrated spray gun with a 6.3mm nozzle was used, maintaining a pressure of 30kPa±5kPa and a distance of 3 meters from the motor surface. The rotating platform ensured that the motor shell was fully covered by water spray from all directions, and the spray lasted for more than 3 minutes at a flow rate of 12.5L/min. After the test, professional technicians disassembled and inspected the motors, confirming that there was no harmful water ingress inside and that all electrical performance indicators remained normal.
For the motor industry, reliability is the core requirement to meet the diverse needs of global customers. Motors are widely used in industrial workshops, construction sites, outdoor equipment and other scenarios, where dust and spray water are common challenges that easily lead to insulation aging, short circuits and other faults, affecting service life. The successful passing of the IP55 test fully verifies the excellent protection performance of motor shells, which can effectively extend the service life of motors, reduce maintenance costs for users, and enhance the stability of the entire equipment system.
This test not only confirms the reliability of motor products but also lays a solid foundation for the further expansion of high-quality motors into the global market. Adhering to the principle of “quality first”, the relevant production and testing will continue to strictly implement international standards, continuously optimize product design and manufacturing processes, and provide global customers with more high-quality, reliable and cost-effective motor products.
