Sliding Bearings vs. Rolling Bearings in High-Voltage Motors: Which Is More Advanced and Longer-Lasting?

Rolling bearings use balls or rollers to convert sliding friction into rolling friction. They have low starting torque and are simple.

Sliding bearings have no rolling elements. The shaft floats on a thin oil film, achieving pure fluid friction. This film also absorbs vibration.

“Advanced” Depends on the Application

Sliding bearings are more complex: they require precision babbitted shells, oil grooves, and external lube systems (pump, cooler, filter). Rolling bearings are standardized and easier to replace.

However, sliding bearings excel in load capacity — for the same size, they can handle far heavier loads. In large high-voltage motors (several MW and above), rolling bearings cannot support the combined rotor weight and electromagnetic forces. Here, sliding bearings are the only choice.

For small to medium high-voltage motors, rolling bearings are often the better solution due to their compactness and low maintenance.

 

Lifespan: Not a Simple Comparison

In theory, sliding bearings can last almost indefinitely because the oil film prevents contact wear.

In practice, lifespan depends heavily on operating conditions:

Sliding bearings are vulnerable during startup/shutdown (when the oil film is incomplete) and to oil contamination, starvation, or pump failure. A few minutes without oil can destroy them.

Rolling bearings have a defined fatigue life (L10 life), but they tolerate short-term lubrication issues better than sliding bearings.

 

Key takeaway: Under ideal conditions with perfect maintenance, sliding bearings outlast rolling bearings. But in real industrial environments, a poorly maintained sliding bearing may fail in months, while a well-maintained rolling bearing can run for years.

 

Conclusion

More advanced? For heavy-duty, high-power applications — yes. For general use — not necessarily.

Longer-lasting? Only if the lubrication system is impeccably maintained. Otherwise, rolling bearings offer more predictable and robust service life.
